We are enthusiastic to learn how many analysts are now confronted with situations where High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography is a suitable solution to their problems and is favored over better known and more widely used analytical methods. At the same time it is rather difficult nowadays to find a place for this “old technique” in the minds of opinion leaders, even if the need exists in analytical laboratories. This has arisen through inadequate information and training.
How to select the method; how to use this HPTLC when it is described as a method of choice; avoidance of usual mistakes; which other samples may be well covered by this technique…
To address these issues an exchange of knowledge is foremost, from which sprang our motivation to hold again an international event with the Interlaken series spirit, last held in 1997.
The first issue, which was held in Lyon (France) in 2003, held its promises with 116 participants from 17 countries, 2 workshops, 15 lectures, 26 posters, and a 4 manufacturers’ session.
Berlin (Germany), in 2006, showed a number of participants above 150, and an increasing high scientific quality. We have therefore no doubt that the 2008 issue will follow this nice trend.

Helsinki is a city where Eastern and Western cultures interact – a city whose urban cosmopolitan lifestyle exists in perfect harmony with nature. The city’s contemporary architecture, design and high technology reinforce the international reputation of Finland’s capital. Helsinki is thus a perfect home port for our grand HPTLC cruise on board a cruising ship Helsinki-Stockholm-Helsinki. The surrounding Finnish and Swedish archipelago, glittering in the early summer light, in combination with the ship’s modern congress facilities and gastronomic delights, is a perfect setting for a successful Symposium. The participation fee includes the full scientific program, and added to that, lunches, coffee breaks, dinners, breakfasts, and two-night accommodation in nice 11 m2 1-2 person cabins with a bathroom and window.
